The benefits of these new bulbs are extensive, including zero hum, long-life electronic ballasts, excellent color rendering, and are four times more efficient, with a lifetime of up to 10,000 hours. Since a CFL outlasts the incandescent by a factor of up to 10 or more, their upfront costs are usually the same. Lifetime savings of a 25-watt CFL over a 100-watt incandescent is 750 kWh!
